Artrepreneurs and the autonomy paradox
2022
In this article, we examine the views that young (under 35 years) freelancers and entrepreneurs who work as professional artists in Finland have of their work. We refer to them as artrepreneurs. Our data sample is composed of the responses of entrepreneurs and freelancers (n = 209) from a survey data on young artists (n = 565) collected in 2017. By using a set of quantitative methods we study the impact of different factors on the job satisfaction experienced by freelancers and entrepreneurs, the nature and motivation factors of their work, as well as their status and livelihood. In our interpretative framework, central concepts are the “hybridity” and “precarity” of artists’ work and “auto…

2008
Tässä pro gradu -työssä tutkitaan nuoruuden siirtymä- eli transitiovaiheessa olevien nuorten taloudellista tilannetta. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella nuorten taloudellisen aseman (objektiiviset tulot, työssäkäynnin luonne ja kulutuskohteet) yhteyttä subjektiiviseen hyvinvointiin ja elämäntyytyväisyyteen. Tutkimuksen lisätehtävänä on selvittää nuorten asumistilannetta elämäntilannetta määrittävänä tekijänä. Tutkimuksen näkökulma on monitieteinen, ottamalla huomioon psykologian ja kulutustutkimuksen tieteenalat mutta pääpaino on sosiologisessa nuorisotutkimuksessa. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty Suomen Akatemian rahoittamassa Finnish Educational Transitions (FinEdu) Studies -tutkimusha…
Subjective financial situation and financial capability of young adults in Finland

It is part of the Finnish Educational Transitions Studies (FinEdu) longitudinal research project. Participants were 418 young adults aged 24–25 at Time 1 and 26–27 at Time 2. Path and mediation models and Structural Equation Modeling followin…

The marketplace vulnerability of low-income unbanked consumers : a developing country perspective
2018
Financial exclusion is recognised as an important element of socio-economic inequality where economically vulnerable groups are excluded from basic financial services. The issue of financial exclusion is mainly concentrated in the world’s developing countries. However, research on the issue of financial exclusion in the field of marketing as well as from the perspective of unbanked consumers is lacking. Although financial exclusion impedes low-income consumers’ welfare, there is a shortage of wellbeing related studies on low-income consumers in the context of developing countries. This doctoral dissertation aims to investigate the ways in which low-income unbanked consumers experience vulne…
Crossing the magical barriers of art : Social class, authorship and capital in the contemporary Finnish literary field
2019
This article examines how social class origin is experienced to affect the trajectories of becoming and being an author in the context of the contemporary Finnish literary field. It analyzes authors’ experiences of social class, artistic work and authorship in a theoretical framework that draws from the work of Pierre Bourdieu and Beverley Skeggs, particularly the concepts of economic and cultural capital, habitus and inscription. Social class origin is argued to be a relevant factor that affects the ways authorship is pursued even in a country, such as Finland, where artistic labor is relatively well supported by the public sector. The results show that authors from upper middle-class, aca…
